Festival hailed a great success
Delighted organisers of this year's Filey Festival have hailed the event a great success.

Poor weather meant some events had to be moved indoors but despite the rain Filey Festival chair Mrs Joyce Hoblyn was pleased with the festival.

"It has been a wonderful week," she said. "We have been very pleased with the turnout at the various shows and events and the feedback I have received has been very favourable indeed.

"We were very fortunate to be able to relocate some events to the Evron Centre and thankfully people's enjoyment was not spoiled too much."

Children's entertainment had been moved indoors on Saturday and Sunday and in particular Professor Fiddle Faddle had gone down a storm.

"He did balloon modelling, Punch and Judy and magic and the children were enthralled," added Joyce.

"Victoria Wright put on a superb concert and the Last Night of the Proms was very well attended and an excellent note to finish on."

All set for final weekend
Organisers are gearing up for a spectacular final weekend of Filey Festival. They have been delighted with the turn out to the various shows and events so far.

And they hope highlights including soprano Victoria Wright, the Acoustic Gathering and Sunday's Party in the Park will see the festival end on a high.

The first weekend got off to a fantastic start with packed houses for shows and a great turnout for the opening ceremony.

There was a good crowd to see Lady Heather Ayckbourn officially declare the festival open. And there was a full house for events like the Patricia Lindley School of Dancing and a great turnout for musicians Raven.

"It has been a wonderful first few days," said Filey Festival chair Mrs Joyce Hoblyn.

"We have been very pleased with the turnout at events and hope that all the other performances and events will be well supported for the rest of the week.

Main headline act at the Gathering is Jon Gomm from Leeds, supported by Carl Woodford, from Sheffield. They will be supported by Amaya Huntly, Alex Kirby, The Producers, Billy Neilsen, The Pieces, Tom Watton, Alastair James, Joe Solo, David Tomlinson, Acoustic Project and Anna Shannon.

Soprano Victoria Wright will stage a performance at the Methodist Church from 8pm with tickets £5.

This will feature a wide range of events and entertainment including music, fancy dress, Punch and Judy, donkey rides, marching bands, martial arts demonstrations, fairground rides, a bouncy castle, face painting and much more.

"Summer Serenade is a new venture this year which includes John Barker, a firm favourite, Lady Manners School who are on tour on this coast, and introducing Raven who are becoming very well known in the area, and Victoria Wright, a soprano who will delight and surprise.

Acoustic Gathering captures imagination
A major get-together of some of the area's best musical talents is fast-becoming a big draw for this year's Filey Festival.

The Acoustic Gathering is scheduled for Saturday 5th July and will feature an impressive line-up of performers.

Acoustic Gathering is a musical event that has been staged twice in Scarborough to appreciative crowds and organisers are delighted to stage it as part of Filey Festival.

Main headline act is Jon Gomm from Leeds who is an Acoustic Gathering favourite, supported by Carl Woodford, another popular Gathering performer who now lives in Sheffield.

They will be supported by Amaya Huntly, Alex Kirby, The Producers, Billy Neilsen, The Pieces, Tom Watton, Alastair James, Joe Solo, David Tomlinson, Acoustic Project and Anna Shannon.

The Acoustic Gathering is staged by MOJO's Music Café in Scarborough and owner Steve Dickinson said: "The Filey Festival Acoustic Gathering will pick some of the most popular acts from the two Gatherings we have had in Scarborough and it promises to be a great line-up.

"We are delighted to be asked to join in with Filey Festival and to bring the Acoustic Gathering to that event. Hopefully it will introduce Filey people to the Acoustic Gathering and also bring some people who enjoy the Gathering concerts to see Filey Festival."

Filey Festival chair Mrs Joyce Hoblyn said: "The Acoustic Gathering has caught the imagination and we are pleased that it will, along with the other varieties of music, form an important part of our festival this year."

Aside from the Acoustic Gathering there is music for all tastes.

Other musical highlights will include the Summer Serenade on Sunday 29th which will see John Barker and the Lady Manners School Orchestra entertain at the Bandstand in Crescent Gardens during the morning and then music from Raven followed by acclaimed soprano Victoria Wright at the Evron Centre Terrace in the afternoon.

Victoria will also appear at the Methodist Church at 7.30pm on Saturday 5 July.

Another highlight will be the well-known Sally Doherty Quartet who will perform Latin jazz at the Evron Centre Concert Hall at 8pm on Wednesday 2nd July.

Aside from these there will be Female Acapella music from York University, performances by Filey Junior School Choir, a guitar concert by Mark DeMott, Filey Fishermen's Choir, a barbershop quartet from York University, trumpet soloist John Barket playing at the bandstand at various times during the festival, The Alley Cats on the two Saturdays and final Sunday and to round it all off the Last Night of the Proms featuring the Scarborough Spa Orchestra.

Festival unveils 2008 programme
Something for everyone was the proud claim of Filey Festival as organisers unveiled the new brochure for this year's event.
A wide variety of entertainment, attractions and fun activities have been planned for the festival, which runs from 28th June to 6th July.

And a last-minute addition to the line-up brings two comedians who will attend this year's prestigious Edinburgh Festival to Filey for a comedy evening.

Arts workshops for children, dance, music, concerts, jazz, shows, poetry, crafts, art in local venues and a super Party in the Park are just some of the highlights.

Filey Festival chair Mrs Joyce Hoblyn said: "After a lot of hard work by all the committee and helpers we are proud to unveil the full programme for this year's Filey Festival for the first time.

"Whilst we are particularly proud of the range and variety of music we have in the programme this year I think it is safe to say there is something for everyone during the nine-day festival and we can't wait."

The festival has been boosted by Arts Council funding and there has also been financial support and sponsorship from Scarborough Borough Council, Filey Town Council, Filey Lions and the Ernest Cook Trust.

The traditional official opening, craft market and music will kick off the festival on 28th June, with town criers from Scarborough and Filey joining Lady Heather Ayckbourn and VIPs in declaring the event open.

Comedians Andrew Clover and Matt Green, left, will each perform a one-hour stand-up routine at the festival's comedy evening on Friday 4th July at the Evron Centre Concert Hall. Both are due to appear at this year's Edinburgh Festival and it is a coup for Filey to secure their appearance.

They replace Dominic Holland who has had to withdraw due to a television commitment.

Other highlights this year will include:

  • The Summer Serenade - a special programme of music at various venues on Sunday 29th June from 10am
  • The variety show at the Evron Centre Concert Hall at 7.30pm on Monday 30th June
  • Jazz with the Sally Doherty Quartet at the Evron Centre Concert Hall on Wednesday 2nd July from 8pm with cabaret style tables at £7 a seat, traditional seats £5.
  • The Acoustic Gathering music line-up from12noon to 7pm at the Bandstand, Crescent Gardens on Saturday 5th July
  • The Party in the Park, with music, stalls, entertainment, bouncy castle, fancy dress, classic cars and more in Glen Gardens from 10am to 4.30pm on Sunday 6th July.

The traditional craft market and music in Crescent Gardens, a fight the tide competition, the last night of the proms and the spot the oddity competition are also included in the festival.

**This year there is also the opportunity for local artists to use a seafront chalet free of charge to create and display their artwork. Contact Kristina Francescotti, Artistic Director, 07815 579 336 to book.

Filey Festival organisers overjoyed at funding news
Delighted organisers of this year's Filey Festival are celebrating after receiving the news that a funding bid has been accepted. They have just heard that their application for funding to the Arts Council has been successful.

And they say the financial boost will help the festival to attract a broader range of entertainment and to widen its appeal in the local community. The nine-day festival runs from 28th June to 6th July 2008 in Filey and includes entertainment and activities for all age groups. Chair of Filey Festival Mrs Joyce Hoblyn said: "The Arts Council grant is the icing on the cake for the festival. It enables us to fund some headline acts and really put the event on the map.

"This year we will have everything, including arts workshops for children, dance, music, concerts, jazz, shows, poetry, crafts, art in the local hotels and a super party in the park to round it off."

The festival is very much a local community event, drawing on the talents of local artists, musicians, school children and performers alongside entertainment brought in from further afield.
In particular the Arts Council funding will help develop music within the festival and to broaden the range on offer - bringing in everything from classical to jazz and contemporary music.

It will also help with marketing the event as organisers seek to involve more of the local community in the festival and to draw in as many visitors from the region and beyond to enjoy it.

VIPs will be Filey Festival ambassadors
Organisers of this year's Filey Festival have unveiled the three youngsters who will become the royal children for the nine-day event. The children, from Filey Junior School, will be young ambassadors for the festival which this year runs from 28th June to 6th July. And after sifting through applications and interviewing the candidates, organisers have made their selection. The Queen will be Eleanor Cross, 11, the Princess will be Olivia Yolezo, eight, and Zach Bowes, 11, will be the Prince. All are from Filey Junior School.

The three will play a key role in this year's Filey Festival by being VIPs at the opening ceremony on 28th June and attending many events. Chair of Filey Festival, Mrs Joyce Hoblyn, said she was very pleased with the selection.

"I am sure they will be excellent royal children for this year's festival and I am already looking forward to seeing them in their royal costumes," she said.
"The selection of the royal children is always an important milestone in our preparations for the festival. You know the festival isn't too far away when the children are chosen."

A panel, including Filey Festival committee members, selected the three youngsters.
Mrs Hoblyn said organisers were still putting together this year's programme but she said it would be a mix of traditional favourites and some new attractions too.
